ABSTRACT –

Susan J. Napier

” At various moments ‘Japan’ when viewed with Western eyes, has been; … a vulnerable but erotic female presence eager to sacrifice herself for the Western male..”

“Anime and Japanese popular culture have been held up by many commentators as examples of ‘soft power’. The political scientist Joseph Nye defines ‘soft power’ by comparing it to ‘hard power’ in which ‘military and economic might often get others to change their position’. In contrast ‘soft power’ is seductive. It attracts; it ‘co-opts people rather than coerces them”

about the body

“This film contains four major female metamorphoses, three of which may be considered negative, since they exemplify woman at her most sexually powerful and therefore threatening.” Susan J. Napier

“The larger the prisoner’s pain (the smaller the prisoner’s world and therefore by comparison) the larger the torturer’s world… pain becomes power… the torturer uses the prisoner’s aliveness to crush the things that he lives for.” Elaine Scarry

“A man’s presence suggests what he is capable of doing to you or for you. His presence may be fabricated, in the sense that he pretends to be capable of what he is not.But the pretence is always towards a power which he exercises on others.” John Berger

Paper Making

For the first time I made my own paper by using scraps and specific colours, after being left to soak in water all night and then blended the next day to create a mushy paste.

Once blended, is poured into a big bucket of water and an A4 mesh is dipped in the water and filtered through is the fibres and chunks of paper to create a new sheet ! Which is then pressed and dried.

Rolled back out on to acetate and peeled the paper is left to dry, first test runs and examples …

I saw a kinesiologist

As part of my research, and also for my own personal health benefits, I saw a kinesiologist. I didn’t know much about it but just was aware of people who had taken this experience before, and gotten something really beneficial out of it. Basically, “Kinesiology is the scientific study of human or non-human body movement. Kinesiology addresses the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological dynamic principles and mechanisms of movement. Applications of kinesiology to human health include biomechanics and orthopedics; strength and conditioning; methods of rehabilitation, such as physical and occupational therapy. Studies of human movement include measures from motion tracking systems, electrophysiology of muscle and brain activity, various methods for monitoring physiological function, and other behavioral and cognitive research techniques.” I know that doesn’t sound at all basic, but to put it simply, they speak to your body and know what it wants based on certain reactions of movements that the body makes.

I went in with an open mind and she began asking me a number of questions about not only my diet but about my mental health, my sleeping pattern and any other stressful occasions that may affect the health of my gut.  Issues were raised while answering questions concerning sleep, diet and alcohol. When it comes down to it it’s pretty obvious I hadn’t been looking after myself to the best of my ability due to working late nights at a pub five days a week.  This was something I was told to reconsider. Then I lay down on a bed flat and she began feeling out pressure points from the top of my head to my toes. The main area that was focused on was my arm, I was asked to resist the pressure put on it as best I could and from the response given in my arm she would be able to know what my body was asking for.

At the end of everything, she had discovered some things which I knew I needed to address, particularly the fact there’s a massive amount of adrenal stress in my body, which affects my anxiety. I have a leaky gut meaning I find it hard to digest food, specifically fatty foods, wheat and I was told to completely stay away from eggs. By placing a liquid sample in a little glass tube of various foods on my body, she knew whether or not my body could handle it well or not. It was very interesting and took awhile to get into the zone, but once finished I felt tired from the experience.
