The final cover for Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. This image I don’t think is something that would typically be found on a book cover. Being primarily an illustrator this was a difficult challenge for me as it involved more focus on type and composition. The font I hand wrote, this was done intentionally as to signify the strong aspect of letter writing which is present in the novel. No colour has been featured on my cover, the only colour I considered possibly using would be a yellow glow from the firefly. Staying true to the story I decided against it as the firefly spoken about in the novel doesn’t actually glow but is actually dying. Other than this, I felt to add colour to the front cover would make the image look too busy and crowded. There is an air of loneliness in the street scene, and loneliness is a key theme in the book.
Overall I’m pleased with how it’s turned out. I believe I’ve ben able to create a sucessful cover and something which represents me as an artist, much more than some of the images I was working on before. Next step is to have it printed and wrapped around an actual book to give a realistic and professional look.
